I did a large drawing in colored inks back in 2005. I called it Black & Blues.

It’s a collection of musicians who work in different genres (jazz and classical), both of which ultimately became more niche than mainstream. You can hear echoes of them in popular forms of music, but they’re mostly kept alive by academics. And in movie soundtracks, I guess. Video games… commercials… You know what, you do still hear from jazz and classical, but they’re used in ways where you don’t think of them as themselves. Anyway, the idea behind this piece was to find congruity where, at a glance, there is incongruity.

I re-did Black & Blues around six years ago when I was learning to draw on a tablet and that updated version looked like this:

Sometime later, I accidentally deleted a bunch of files from my laptop and the updated Black & Blues was lost. I wanted to make it into a print and frame it for our wall but couldn’t do it without the file. So I re-did it again last month. Now it looks like this:

It changes a little every time. I wonder if I’ll ever find the need to do it over again before I’m all done.

Cheers.
